* The set of teachers in that image above were Art teachers in training for one extra year in New Zealand in extra education in what was called the Tovey method, in their training life. **The feature aim was the delivery of bicultural Art tools. Thanks for your 100% support, Mervyn and Peter. I gained my first A + mark from my assessor, Peter Stitchbury, when I went to my first teaching job at Malfroy Primary School in Rotorua. There I designed the School's Art curriculum for all of the school classes. 1968 (11) I was introduced to Marti Friedlander in Auckland quite soon after I arrived there to settle for a while in 1979 and start to make plans for the doco IN JOY. Marti made very clear observations of herself as a recent immigrant to New Zealand in her writing. There is such insight in her instinct in making many photographs of Maori culture. Not the least of her skill in another topic area is her famous photograph of a flock of sheep on a road.

More on Tovey, the educator in Art. I had been educated, living so close to Te Hauke and the school, Te Aute College, about the loved educator, Āpirana Turupa Ngata (1874 - 1950. I became conscious of directions taken by Cliff Whiting and Colin McCahon, in those teacher college years. In 1968, on my first placement year at Malfroy Primary School, in Rotorua, in the art teacher fraternity I got to know there, I met Para Matchett.
