*Henry Clay Frick was a coke and steel magnate.[4][5] As early as 1870, he had hung pictures throughout his house in Broadford, Pennsylvania.[6] Frick acquired the first painting in his permanent collection, Luis Jiménez's In the Louvre, in 1880,[7] after moving to Pittsburgh.[6] He did not begin buying paintings in large numbers until the mid-1890s,[8][9] and he began devoting significant amounts of time to his collection.[10] This made Frick one of several prominent American businessmen who also collected art, along with figures such as Henry Havemeyer and J. P. Morgan.[11] In explaining why he collected art, Frick said, "I can make money... I cannot make pictures."[12] He curated his collection with the help of Joseph Duveen, 1st Baron Duveen.[13][14]

Response to Nomads 'When it came to wonder, a moment that imprinted into my psyche was to see Nomads. I was all a swell of emotion one day whilst travelling in our van, heading up to Europe. The camel riders approached diagonally towards us. As the caravan drew near, I was abruptly aware that our road cut across the diagonal. Therefore, we pulled the van over and stopped. Winding our windows down, there were the sounds of sheep hooves clatter, camels breathing. The people made no eye contact with us in as close as a ten meters of gap for glancing as they swept past, not hesitating or stopping, indeed ignoring us. Women and children were aboard their beasts, their bodies in wrap, eyes blue and kohl marked, the black yurts visible in folds on other animal's backs.
