I learned that third clause when I was a girl. My English migrant family's parents came from Suffolk England. to New Zealand. One ancestor was a miller. Farmers abided by the one third law too. Letting fields lie fallow. I lived on a dry land farm. Clover grew everywhere. Soft and green. As I now live in Canterbury it is a long memory back to north island farming practice. I think of watercress growing in wayside rivulets and streams.

New Zealand. In the background. Podocarp forest of rimu, kahikatea, miro, mataī and tōtara. This forest segment has been fenced in since the very early settlement years as a reserve. The farm past there was sold on in 1896 to become a village called Elsthorpe with twenty two subdivisions. It is a very early inland Hawkes Bay village.
