Jocotepec has been mentioned affectionately elsewhere in our story. I spent 6 weeks there in 1966 when Bernie Evans and I did a road trip from Lake Louise to Mexico. I went on to New Orleans and through the USA to spend Christmas with my mother in Simcoe. I was enrolled to begin a Masters degree at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver in mid January 1967.
Jocotepec then was without electricity. Bernie tripped over a pig one night as we staggered home from some event. The story I want to relate was set up by Dave Bennett the pottery exporter. He was also a bagpiper.
We sort of knew that Luis Echeverria was running for President and he was going to be travelling through town on his election tour. His entourage had not planned to stop in Jocotepec. Dave thought it would be fun if we got some small Mexican flags, lined the dusty street and waved as the Echeverria bus roared through town. Dave would play ‘ Hail To The Chief ‘ on the bagpipes. And we would do our bit for his campaign.
So the bus comes along and there we are, a group of about 10 people waving our flags and Dave blasting out sweet sounds on his pipes. The bus stops and Echeverria hops out, says a few words and shakes everyone's hand, compliments Dave's ‘ Hail To The Chief ‘ and we all get on with our day. Power to the people.
